Joe and I met our friend Eric in Fonda on the morning of May 17th. Weather was not in our corner that morning as the claim, which now is 6 feet underground, was also under water.

While we had power tools, a 9000 volt generator, and a lot of Red Bull driven energy, we did not have a power suction unit or drain machine, or anything to remove this water.

EFMLS Wildacres was an experience that Joe had heard about, but I had never heard of the place. He did not know much about EFMLS Wildacres either but anecdotal background from our friends at the Nassau Mineral Club and the Island Rockhounds.  We did some research on Wildacres, got permission and week long passes from our respective girlfriends, and we were on a road trip!

Orange Garnets in West Redding, Connecticut

So hunting for orange garnets we were following the varied instructions from the web about an outcrop, located about half-mile from the West Redding, Connecticut train station.  Easy enough to set your GPS to “West Redding Train Station.” First thing we noticed was a cop car idling in the train station parking lot. We had not even begun excavating and they were after us already.

Quartz and Pyrite Abandoned Mine Site in Ellenville, New York

Joe and I had a great drive to the park that contains this quartz and pyrite abandoned mine, which is open to the public even though it is on park lands.  We got really lucky because a woman and 3 kids were coming down the path as we started and had come to a fork in the path.  So we asked them if they knew of the quartz and pyrite, and they pointed to take the path to the right, climb up of you adventurous on to the rocks, and see what you find.
