Here more than<br \/>\n65 dealers, swappers, distributors, wholesalers and collectors can buy, sell, or<br \/>\nswap beryl, quartz crystals, semi-precious stones, and rocks and minerals of<br \/>\nall sorts. Displays range from newly found specimens in the rough to fossils,<br \/>\nprized collector\u2019s pieces and hand-crafted jewelry.<br \/>\nThe event takes place at the Gilsum Elementary School grounds, Route 10 in<br \/>\nGilsum, just north of Keene, NH, and is about 2 hours from Boston. Show<br \/>\nhours are 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Saturday and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Sunday.<br \/>\nThis year\u2019s event includes a two special presentations. Saturday, June 27th at<br \/>\n1:00 PM, geologist and collector Nancy Swing will discuss \u201cRockhounding in<br \/>\nNew England.\u201d Swing is a former professor of Geology and Oceanography at<br \/>\nthe Community College of Rhode Island, has been the featured speaker at the<br \/>\nEast Coast Gem and Mineral show for the last 14 years, and is a regular at<br \/>\nthe Gilsum Rock Swap &#038; Mineral Show. Prized specimens will be on display.<br \/>\nThe presentation will be held at the Elementary School gymnasium adjacent<br \/>\nto the field.<br \/>\nIn addition, noted collector Steve Garza will also offer a prospecting for<br \/>\nbeginners demonstration, including the proper way to break a rock to uncover<br \/>\nthe minerals or precious stones within. That takes place at 2:00 PM at space<br \/>\n#40 on the field.<br \/>\nGilsum\u2019s many mines operated until the 1940s and yielded feldspar, mica<br \/>\nand beryl. Most are now abandoned, although one, the Beauregard mine, is<br \/>\navailable to mineral clubs through prior arrangement. Today collectors prize<br \/>\nother minerals such as beryl. Maps showing locations of local mines are<br \/>\navailable during the show.<br \/>\nSince the show\u2019s inception, the town of Gilsum has opened its doors for the<br \/>\nevent. Activities include a presentation on prospecting Saturday, daily<br \/>\npancake brunch, bake sale, book sale, a traditional Saturday night New<br \/>\nEngland ham and bean supper with homemade pies and a chicken barbeque<br \/>\ndinner Sunday afternoon.<br \/>\nAdmission is free, although donations are graciously accepted.
